This command allows us to select text fragments depending on the commercial permissions of the font they are in.
Digital fonts include in their files plenty of information about themselves. Among those metadata, there are embedded commercial licences with the permissions of use their manufacturers give to their users.
These licence flags do not necessarily imply that an operation cannot be done, but rather that the manufacturer does or does not legally allow it (unless the users asks for express permission).
This PitStop command allows the selection of a font on the basis of just four font license criteria (although fonts can have a few more flags of this kind):
-
"
Embed
": the complete source, with all necessary information, can be embedded within the PDF. -
"
Subset
": Partial embedding of the font is allowed (only the characters that are used within the PDF are saved, which reduces its final size). -
"
Outline
": The font can be loaded and texts can be converted into outlines. -
"
Preview and print
": Permission is given only for the font to be temporarily loaded into the system so that the document can be viewed and printed "as is". The document cannot be edited (in other programs, the property is called "Print and preview").
Checking an option means that we want PitStop to select the texts that have a font with that permission. So, for example, checking "Embed
" will select al segments of text that use fonts with the permission for embedding them (whether they are embedded or not in that PDF is irrelevant).
